Beware of DIY

Chances for a failed data recovery from an Intel server are rare (<1%) and the most common cause is a fatal damage to one or more of the hard drives. Failure causes in Intel servers

  • Physical damages on hard drives or SSDs (e.g. defective read or write heads, electronic damages, bearings or bad blocks)
  • An aborted rebuild. A single read error on just one more hard drive might lead to an aborted rebuild of the RAID.
  • Malfunction of the controller
  • Errors or bugs inside the firmware

Mind these steps with a failed Intel Server

  • Mark all hard disks or SSDs with their slot-numbers (within the RACK or Tower) and mark the defective hard disks or SSDs.
  • Do not install any programs - especially in case of data loss caused by a deletion of one or more virtual machines or in case of any other logical problem. This can overwrite critical data.
  • Do not try to rebuild the RAID. An incomplete or corrupt rebuild might lead to even more problems and multiply the needed effort while also reducing the chances for a successful recovery.
