How to prevent further damage

It's very important that you remain calm! Label the hard drives with their position (slot number).

Tell us the NAS model and the built-in hard drive model (manufacturer, model, e.g. Buffalo TeraStation, LinkStation, Seagate, Western Digital...).

Don't perform file system checks (e.g. fsck), because NAS systems use processors incompatible with PCs. Therefore a file system check can cause massive aggravation of the damage and lower the chances of a successful data rescue.

To prevent further physical or logical damage, we recommend not to open the hard drive. Also, don't install new software on the system.
