Causes for data loss of Hitachi hard drives

Just like any other mechanical or electronic device, Hitachi hard drives are not resistant against wear and tear or a multitude of other failures. For example: A headcrash (click of death), PCB errors, damages on the ferromagnetic surfaces (read errors or I/O errors), firmware errors, bearing damage and motor damage or environmental unfluences such as water- or moisture damages or heat or fire damages.

General information about Hitachi

Amongst other branches Hitachi produced their own hard drives with 2,5 inches. In 2003 the hard drive branch with popular models (DeskStar, TravelStar, MicroDrive, CinemaStar) was taken over by IBM and merged with their own hard drive branch. The existing production agreement between IBM and ExcelStor was maintained after the takeover. In spring 2012 Western Digital took over the Hitachi Global Storages Technologies (Hitachi). The 3,5 inch hard drive branch was handed over to Toshiba in the same year. HGST was the first manufacturer to present a hard drive with a 10 TB capacity in 2014. On year later the HUS726060ALA640 (HGST Ultrastar He6) followed, which is filled with helium.
