Causes for data loss of ExcelStor hard drives

Just like any other mechanical or electronic device, ExcelStor hard drives are not resistant against wear and tear or a multitude of other failures. For example: A headcrash (click of death), PCB errors, damages on the ferromagnetic surfaces (read errors or I/O errors), firmware errors, bearing damage and motor damage or environmental unfluences such as water- or moisture damages or heat or fire damages.

General information about ExcelStor

In the beginning ExcelStor manufactured hard drives for IBM and developed for the hard drive manufacturer Conner Technologies, which was taken over by ExcelStor in 2001. From 2003 on ExcelStor manufactured hard drives for Hitachi (HGST). In 2010/2011 ExcelStor vanished from the hard drive sector.

The ExcelStor hard drive models are mostly named after planets or Roman gods (Jupiter, Venus) and/or mythological figures like Ganymede, Callisto, Europa and Io, who als also eponymous for moons. The Gemini series is named after a stellar constellation or a lunar crater (Geminus).
